NIL Education
NIL changed college sports forever. The financial literacy that was supposed to come with it never arrived. This page exists to fill that gap — in plain language, with no agenda other than making sure your family understands what it is walking into.
Let's Start at the Beginning
Since July 2021, student athletes have had the legal right to earn money from their name, image, and likeness — through endorsements, social media, appearances, training camps, and more. The House settlement expanded this further to include direct revenue sharing from universities themselves. That means real money, arriving faster than most families know how to handle it.
NIL income is not a scholarship. It is not a gift. It is taxable self employment income that requires a plan, a structure, and someone who knows what they are looking at. Most families find that out at tax time — when it is already too late to do anything about it.
The other thing most families do not understand is that NIL is a window, not a salary. It is tied to eligibility, performance, and brand value. Every one of those things is temporary. The families who treat NIL income as spending money without building a structure underneath it are the same ones who end up in financial distress within five years of the career ending.
That is not a story about bad decisions. That is a story about a gap. A mother navigating uncharted territory in real time, making calls to someone who had been living in that territory for years. That is exactly what we are here for.
"Your child could sign a contract that is unfavorable to your family. And when that happens — and it does happen — the other side of that table will tell you: it is not personal. It is business."
— Marty McNair

Before the First Deal Gets Signed
If money is starting to move, run through this list. If you cannot check all of these boxes, that is where we start.
Every NIL deal is a legal agreement. Know the exclusivity clauses, term lengths, and what happens if eligibility changes before you sign anything.
NIL income requires quarterly estimated payments and the right entity structure in place before the first payment — not after tax season arrives.
NIL income should flow into a separate account so it can be tracked, taxed correctly, and invested with intention.
Income without a structure is just spending money. Know how this window funds your family's next chapter before it closes.
What happens if an injury ends the career tomorrow? Coverage has to be in place before the injury, not after.
Agents, brands, and schools all have representation. Your family deserves the same — someone whose only job is to protect you at the table.
